Tonight from BBC North East and Cumbria: The Closure of Tress A Case History
Tress was a small engineering works on the banks of the Tyne, a distant outpost of the multinational Fairey Company, a big corporation with varied interests in aviation and engineering. A year-and-a-half ago Fairey went bankrupt but the Tress factory and the jobs were saved by the intervention of the Government's National Enterprise Board. After only three months, in the middle of a strike, the NEB withdrew its support and the factory closed.
Michael Nally of The Observer tries to find out what went wrong and looks at the lessons for the rest of Northern industry.
