A three-million-year-old lady called Lucy; a small family drowned in a flash flood in Ethiopia; Nut-cracker Man, Handyman and a remarkable skull called 1470 - all these are pieces in a jigsaw puzzle. The puzzle is being pieced together in Africa, and it's building up a new picture of man's origins and antiquity.
In the last few years a number of exciting fossil finds in Africa have redrawn man's family tree and given new answers to questions of where we came from.

An opera by Monteverdi in a production for Kent Opera by Jonathan Miller with Peter Knapp as Orfeo and the Kent Opera Orchestra conducted by Roger Norrington.
Orfeo, written in 1607, is the earliest opera to find a firm place in the modem repertoire. It tells the classical Greek story of the love of Orpheus the singer for Eurydice, and of his attempt, so nearly successful, to win her back from the Underworld.
In this highly praised production, seen tonight in a studio recording, Jonathan Miller has used the paintings of the 17th-century French painter Poussin as the inspiration for the settings, costumes, and dances. The Orchestra of 20 play on original instruments aiming to recreate the style of Monteverdi's own time.
