The last of 12 programmes Written and presented by Magnus Magnusson The End of the Old
The familiar Old Testament story ends with the return of the Jews from Babylon-to a new Jerusalem and a new Temple. The last of the BC series takes the story of the Jews and Judaism further, to the threshold of the Christian era, and the reign of Herod.
The excavation of Herod's many palaces and fortresses has provided a vivid picture of his life and times; but 70 years after his death, the first Jewish Revolt against the Romans was crushed by the final destruction of the Jerusalem Temple and the ending of Jewish resistance in the strong-hold of Masada.
