In the week of the TUC Conference, Britain's nine million pensioners are looking for increasing support from the Trade Union movement. Most of us look forward to the time when we will be able to do all the things we don't have time for during our working lives. But what actually happens on retirement is something to which we don't give a great deal of thought, until it's upon us. Few people have prepared for the sudden end to work, and, as a result, loneliness and confusion are commonplace.
Why do we waste the experience and wisdom of the over-60s, and continue to promote this feeling of rejection? Isn't it time to take a fresh look at our attitudes to the older generation? Or will we continue to accept the loss of status, companionship and income that old age brings?
