'When I use the word "Protestant" I don't want to keep reminding myself that in the 16th century Martin Luther disagreed with the Pope. But it's a label and I've come to America with the idea that to the true Protestant all labels, all institutions, are suspect.'

Indianapolis is an 'average' American city. In its 1100 churches you can see a bewildering multiplicity of Protestantism.

We visit a huge Fundamentalist church preaching the literal truth of every word in the Bible; a Methodist Church, much involved in community projects, and grappling with the problems of doubt and certainty. And finally, a small poor over-crowded black Baptist church where the hymns swing and emotions run high.
