The Green Machine
Botanists admit there are many mysteries about plants. By what mechanism does a plant detect gravity? How does it perceive light? How can a pea tendril feel the object it coils round? How does a Venus fly trap react so fast? What are the tiny electrical impulses within plants? Do plants have extra-sensory perception?

A series of ten programmes presenting the history and development of the firearm. 2 : Ars Gratia Artis
Introduced by Christopher Roads
In the 16th and 17th centuries, while the gun was evolving from match-lock through wheel-lock to flint-lock, firearms became a prime vehicle for artistic decoration - the guns of the time are often exquisitely embellished and worth thousands of pounds today. In salesrooms, in private collections, in museums, fine guns bear witness to the skill and artistry of their makers.

Tonight from BBC North East. Lindisfarne
'Back Where We Started From '
In 1973 the ' Geordie ' rock group LINDISFARNE split up, much to the consternation of their world-wide following. They had, after all, done for Newcastle what The
Beatles had done for Liverpool and put the North East firmly on the pop map. Last December they decided to, get together for a Christmas Concert in Newcastle's City Hall to see if the Lindisfarne magic still worked. Tonight they talk at length about their ties with Tyneside, the rise to the top, and the reasons for the split-up. Reporter DAVID WARD
