Honolulu, in the summer of 1941. At the Schofield Barracks, army life proceeds as usual. Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt, a former champion amateur boxer, is being persecuted by his commanding officer Captain Holmes because he refuses to join the company's boxing team; Sergeant Warden embarks on an affair with Holmes's wife, Karen; and Prewitt's hot-headed friend, Maggio, makes a dangerous enemy of the sadistic
Sergeant ' Fatso ' Judson. Meanwhile, in Japan, a chain of events is about to be set in motion that will affect the lives of everyone.
Fred Zinnemann won the first of his two Academy Awards to date for his direction of this film which won eight Oscars in 1953 and became part of movie mythology.
