It's like a fever ... it gets hold of you and you can't leave it alone. Over 70 years ago Fred Betty, MBE, caught Carnival fever in Bridgwater and he still hasn't recovered. Symptoms are a joyous lunacy which makes people join Carnival clubs, each one conveniently based in a pub. They spend every waking hour - and sacrifice holidays - working on an act for the Carnival concert and on the float for the procession.

John Arlott recalls some of the outstanding matches of the 100 years since England first played Australia at cricket.
W. G. Grace, Sir Donald Bradman, Sir Len Hutton are some of the names that have illuminated the history of these matches. Harold Larwood in the notorious bodyline tour, Jim Laker's 19 wickets at Old Trafford and the modern-day menace of Lillee and Thomson provide some of the action that illustrates this centenary.

Based on an episode in the life of Eugene Marais.
Eugene Marais, poet and naturalist, was born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1871. His books The Soul of the Ape and The Soul of the White Ant are his best known works outside South Africa, where he is considered a founder of Afrikaans Literature.
He was also a morphine addict. The Guest at Steenkampskraal is about a nine-month experiment in which Marais is brought by his friend and doctor to a remote farm in the Transvaal. Here, he tries to cure himself of his addiction.
Athol Fugard, South African playwright, author of Sizwe Bansi is Dead, has written the script and plays the role of Marais.
