7: The House of David
' And DAVID TOOK THE HEAD
OF THE PHILISTINE, AND
BROUGHT IT TO JERUSALEM
The two Books of Samuel tell of the Israelites' desperate and bloody struggle to survive in the face of the marauding Philistines. On the death of Saul, we follow the fortunes of David - one-time shepherd-lad, court-favourite and guerrilla leader - now the first king of a united Judah and Israel. This unification was heralded by a macabre encounter ' by the Pool of Gibeon' (II Samuel Ch 2 v 13). Dr James Pritchard 's discovery of the Gibeon pool in the 1960s ranks as one of the most exciting episodes in Biblical archaeology. Bible reader Eric Porter
