The Ape That Stood Up
A three-million-year-old lady called Lucy; a small family drowned in a flash flood in Ethiopia; Nutcracker Man, Handyman and a remarkable skull called 1470 - all these are pieces in a jigsaw puzzle.

A series of four programmes 3: A Celtic Inheritance
Seaweed, cockles, unleavened bread and cawl are still eaten plentifully from Carmarthen to the Gower Coast. They are the visible inheritance of a Celtic past - of an age stretching back to mythology.
The bakestone - with its pancakes, welshcakes, and unleavened bread -is a thing of the past. Cockles come mostly from Norfolk, but for centuries were gathered from the vast Llanridian sands. Seaweed is now imported from Scotland but for years families picked it from the sea shore. Before Roman times, people were catching Towy sewin from coracles. Now there are only 12 coracles remaining.

The first of three Omnibus films about the transatlantic take-over of our popular song and dance.
From Stephen Foster to Ragtime
From nowhere but the United
States could such have sprung. It is the music of the hustler and the feverishly active speculator.' That was how The Times described ' ragtime' which was sweeping through Britain in 1913: the latest in a long series of sensations from the USA. How were the Americans doing it? A key witness is 92-year-old pianist/composer Eubie Blake. At his home in New York, he demonstrates the syncopation that caused such an upheaval.
Narrator IAN HOLM

A girl claims that she has been raped. But can she convince a sceptical society, the police and the jury of the court case that follows? Act of Rape explores the attitudes which have made many rape victims suffer unnecessarily before the courts and prevented many girls from ever reporting that they were attacked. Jacky Gillott talks to girls who have been raped - and introduces a dramatisation based on recent court cases.

In the play - written by Fay Weldon - the fact that the young couple had intercourse is agreed. The jury must decide whether the girl was raped or whether she consented ... and the personal prejudices of 12 men and women cannot be divorced from the question of innocence or guilt.

Their deliberations set the scene for the studio debate - does the law and society work against the woman who has been raped? Will the new Act of Parliament help innocent victims or will it lead to wrong convictions?

Taking part: Judge Christmas Humphreys, Cmdr Daphne Skillern from Scotland Yard, MPs Robin Corbett and Ivan Lawrence, Professor Brian Simpson who served on the Heilbron Advisory Group on the Law of Rape, and others professionally involved as well as women who have been raped.
