Story: "A Winter Story" written by Max Bolliger, illustrated by Beatrix Scharen
To mark the 50th anniversary of Winnie the Pooh, The Book Programme presented this film about Pooh's creator.
It is a portrait of two men and their happy collaboration, filmed in the countryside in which the stories were set. Richard Kay plays the young A.A. Milne, author of the Pooh books, and David Horovitch plays the young E.H. Shepard, who illustrated the stories.
E.H. Shepard himself appears, recalling his first visits to the 'Hundred Acre Wood' and 'Poohsticks Bridge'. And Christopher Robin Milne, son of the author, reads extracts from his father's memoirs and from the books and poems.
Starring The Marx Brothers
Possibly the Marx Brothers' most famous film, the plot has something to do with Otis B. Driftwood's plans to launch a Mrs Claypool as a patron of Grand Opera.

Jack Donovan has a houseful and a life-full of Princely Toys. They are not strictly toys but a collection of magnificent automata - working models that will blow you a soap bubble, do you a trick or make you gasp at the audacity of their acrobatics. Any one of them alone would be a marvel, a priceless and irreplaceable memory of that 19th-century art which could accept nothing but the best - and could afford to pay for it. It's a fair promise to say that you'll be delighted, intrigued, baffled, amused, and maybe, just maybe, led back into that delicious dream-world which started with the first teddy bear.
