Secrets of a Coral Island
Pacific fishermen are famous for their skill. They can catch fish with a kite and a tassel of spiders' webs. Their traditional knowledge -never written down but passed from father to son - is the accumulation of 2,000 years of watching the fish they catch in their clear coral seas.
But how much do they know that scientists don't? To answer this question Dr Bob Johannes -a marine biologist - went to live with them OR a group of islands called Palau. They taught him how to fish and slowly began to tell him what they knew. He was amazed. New and unexpected details began to emerge of fish behaviour, of creatures reacting to the moon and of octopuses climbing trees. But, DR JOHANNES is racing against time. The pressures of the 20th century may mean the old men's knowledge will die with them.
