In some schools today children sit in rows, arms folded, and reciting their tables under the firm direction of a teacher. In others they're given more freedom of choice: some learn the new maths in a small group playing bingo, others learn by playing on the floor with bricks. There's fierce debate between educationists about teaching styles, but there's been precious little scientific research into which method works best... until now. Today the first major research report to attempt an objective evaluation of styles of teaching in British Primary schools was published, and certain styles come in for heavy criticism. It will cause many questions about current trends in education. In this film Horizon reviews these findings and their significance for both children and teachers.
