A fortnight ago Ireland suffered no disgrace in their defeat by Wales while England, had they taken their chances, should have returned from Murrayfield with more to show for their efforts than a ten-point defeat. Both teams will be striving today to avoid the ignominy of winning 'the wooden spoon.'

Art for art's sake... money for God's sake.

Forty years ago during the great depression, the United States government launched a unique experiment in subsidising artists. Forty thousand artists, writers, actors and musicians were put on the payroll of the Works Progress Administration. They set to work decorating post offices, schools and libraries, producing plays and writing state guides.

Among those taking part in tonight's 2nd House are Zero Mostel, Studs Terkel, the black novelist Ralph Ellison, author of "The Invisible Man", painters James Brooks and Alice Neel, art critic Harold Rosenberg, and actor and director John Houseman.
