Jacklin, brilliant winner of the British and us Opens in successive years, and Palmer, greatest personality of modern golf, are both even with par after playing six of the best 18 holes on Britain's classic seaside links.
In this programme the film cameras cover the next six...
The 1st at Hoylake: 'The most uninviting first hole in Europe'... 'The most claustrophobic opening hole in golf'... comments about a hole where one false move means out-of-bounds.
The 'Island' at Carnoustie: 458 yards, par 4. Where Open Championships have been lost... where the Barry Burn curls and coils across the fairway.
The Long Hole in at St Andrews: 560 yards, par 5. Hole of 'The Beardies,' 'the Elysian Fields,' and 'Hell Bunker'... and the most dangerous drive in golf.
The 'Dowie' at Hoylake: 193 yards, par 3. Controversial! ... a few yards from the flag and you're out-of-bounds.
The 'Barry Burn' at Carnoustie: 243 yards, par 3. 'Wind... bunkers... slopes... hollows... we've now proved it impossible! ' says Henry Longhurst.
The 9th at Muirfield: 495 yards, par 5. Perpetually against the wind and out-of-bounds over the wall... 'The most difficult I've played,' said Gary Player.
