The story - based on the Henry James novel Washington Square - of a wealthy but unattractive girl pursued by a fortune hunter. The Heiress was one of the outstanding films of 1949, winning not only the Best Performance by an Actress Award for Olivia de Havilland but four other Oscars as well, including one for the distinguished musical score by Aaron Copland.
