This week's programme in the series on Man and Science today.

An old lady, frail, nearly blind, crippled by arthritis, living alone in slum conditions. As someone typical of so many of our 6 1/2 million elderly, just what kind of life can she expect today?
Geriatrics, the care of old people, has never been a popular branch of medicine. Lacking both money and status it has constantly had to fight for a place in the priorities of our medical services. But using new treatments the country's small army of 250 geriatricians has recently been able to send home more and more patients to resume a normal life. It is in itself an encouraging story, but some believe that geriatrics is solving one problem only to create another. Can the community cope with increasing numbers who, because of modern medicine, are living longer than ever before?
Tonight's programme looks at the efforts being made to keep the elderly healthy, out of hospital and independent.
