Round the rim of the western world, guarding its frontiers, are the legionaries of the 20th century - the soldiers and airmen of the American armed forces. In Europe there are 300,000 of them. They have been here now for more than a quarter of a century. They have brought their families, built hospitals and schools, created their own self-sufficient world as once the British did in India.
They are in Europe prepared and pledged to fight if necessary. What do they think of the place, the people, and the job they are here to do? Obviously they consider it a better posting than another, much more violent, on the other side of the world-obviously it's 'A Better Place than 'Nam.' But what else? What fills the minds and the days of an army so large, so far away from home... without a war to fight?
