When the Strategic Air Command base at Carmody, California, fails the test of a surprise 'alert,' Wing-Commander Jim Caldwell (Rock Hudson) is assigned to tighten things up. The stress soon begins to tell in his relationships with the men, whilst his wife finds the tension begins to bear on their marriage as well.
