This year the Arts Council will spend nearly £4-million on subsidising music throughout the country and still it is not enough. Music Now goes to Bradford, York, and Teeside to see what the authorities there are, or are not, doing to bring music to their towns.

Mrs Maureen Barwise has recently decoded the hieroglyphics surrounding pictures of the musicians of ancient Egypt. She explains her work, and together with Dr Carl Dolmetsch, Maria Kaufmann, and John Truleaux, performs pieces taking us back 5,000 years.

The Ali Brothers from Pakistan display their stunning vocal virtuosity with Alla Rakha, tabla.

Josephine Nendick, in an interview with Robin Ray, demonstrates how East is nearer West these days when she sings examples from Luciano Berio and John Cage. She is accompanied at and on the piano by John Tilbury.
