Sakkara was the burial place of kings and nobles at the dawn of Egyptian history. Two thousand years later it became a place of pilgrimage for devotees of various fantastic cults involving the mummification of countless sacred birds, baboons, and cattle.
Chronicle tells the story of Professor Walter Emery's search there for Imhotep, the architect of the First Pyramid, who was later deified as God of Medicine. The excavations reached a climax last February with the finding of the Catacombs of Isis, a vast underground burial place of the mothers of the sacred bulls.

The first of three plays by Cecil P. Taylor
With Leslie Sands as Cromwell

On 28 December 1648 Charles I and Oliver Cromwell met in the private chapel at Windsor Castle. They were to set the seal on their own fate and the fate of the nation. England was shortly to see the downfall of a king and the rise of a dictator.

The weekly arts magazine presented by James Mossman

A Pagan Place
Edna O'Brien's new novel is published next week. In her first novel The Country Girls she described the experience of an imaginative girl growing up in the west of Ireland.
In the latest one she returns to these themes - the fears and guilt associated with the Roman Catholic Church, the frustration felt by the inhabitants of a small, isolated community, and the continually changing landscape.
In tonight's film Edna O'Brien reflects on these childhood experiences.

Original Prints
The arts of etching and lithography, in which Rembrandt and Lautrec achieved some of their greatest master-pieces, are still very much alive; and with the arrival of new techniques the range of original prints is wider than it has ever been. Review looks at four artists producing work in what some call the 'democratic medium.'
