Most of the 3,000 miles of the East African Safari Rally are unsurfaced tracks which tropical rains turn into a mud-bath. In dry weather rocks and ruts break the cars and dust blinds the drivers. The Safari is the toughest event in the international rally calendar and the stiffest test in the world of the mass-produced family saloon.
B.M.C. and Ford of Britain entered this year's Safari in a bid to break Volkswagen and Peugeot's long run of success in the event.
Wheelbase reporters Maxwell Boyd and Barrie Gill follow their fortunes over four days and three nights of flat-out driving in the equatorial heat of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
