Alexander Kok recalls his time as the youngest member of the Philharmonia and playing in the orchestra's first concert in the Kingsway Hall in 1945 under Sir Thomas Beecham. Kok tells how he was enrolled in the orchestra after a chance meeting with Walter Legge , and he remembers eminent colleagues such as the clarinettist Reginald Kell and the trumpeter Harold Jackson. The Royal Academy of Music presents a programme of 16th- and 17th-century antiphonal music associated with St Mark's, Venice. Vocal and instrumental music with cornetts, sackbutts, natural trumpets, recorders, strings and organ by visitors such as Monteverdi, Frescobaldi, Schutz and Lassus is interwoven with music by native Venetians led by the Gabrieli family, including Giovanni Gabrieli's great antiphonal Sonata in 22 Parts.
