2: In the Salon
By the end of the Sun King's reign, the musical focus in France had shifted from an increasingly gloomy Versailles to the glittering salons of Paris. A new, less formal era in French music-making had arrived, characterised by the emergence of new genres, including the sonate and cantate française. Today's programme includes Campra's cantata Les Femmes sung by Jean - François Gardeil with Les Arts
Florissants, Clerambault's cantata Leandre et Hero sung by Julianne Baird with Music's Re-creation, his Harpsichord Suite No 2 played by Kenneth Gilbert , and his trio sonata La Félicité performed by Les Elements. Repeated next Tuesday 11.30pm
