The stories of Idomeneus and Jephthah are closely related. Each warrior vows that, if successful in battle, he will sacrifice the first creature he meets on his return home. The tragic consequences for Idomeneus's son and Jephthah's daughter may be heard in Campra's Idomenee and Monteclair's Jephte, the first biblical work staged at the Paris Opera. Excerpts from both are performed by William Christie and Les Arts Florissants. Plus Monteclair's cantata Pyrame et Thisbe sung by Monique Zanetti (soprano), Jean-Paul Fouchecourt (tenor) and Jean-Francois Gardeil (baritone).
