The half-ton males have staked out their territories. The females are arriving to pup. Soon, the sand dunes behind the shoreline will be dotted with cavorting youngsters. As the brief summer comes to an end, the new pups will leave the beach to spend their first winter swimming alongside their mothers in the vast southern oceans.
