A combination of social and political reasons has in recent years caused the island of Jamaica to fall from favour as a holiday destination - especially among the Americans. With a new government and a new approach, Jamaica is fighting to regain its place on the 'holiday map. John Carter reports. It was back in 1978 that the Holiday programme brought ' gites ' to the notice of its audience-with the result that the booking system for these French rural properties had to be drastically revised, so great was the interest. Five years later Anne Gregg travels again to some foreign fields that provide homes for holidaymaking Britons. In the fourth of her reports on Great British Weekends, Sarah Kennedy travels to Tiverton and discovers a most unusual hotel.
