Stanley Kubrick's epic space adventure starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood
A mysterious slab has been found on the moon, beaming signals to Jupiter. At this first indication of sentient beings in space, a nine-month voyage to follow the signals is set up, with two astronauts manning a huge spaceship and three more travelling in a state of hibernation. As they hurtle beyond the range of mission control, the crew is disturbed to discover that Hal, the ship's computer, has a mind of his own ...
Made before man had set foot on the moon, Kubrick's vision of the future remains the most accomplished science prediction ever filmed.

Not only Charles and Diana but also Ambrose and Tony and Shirley and Delma ...
It was watched by 750 million people around the world. Charles and Diana were the stars. But there were nearly a million extras in the great Royal Wedding production.
Travelling through the night came a busload of Liverpool ladies; from Wales came a male voice choir; a group from Milwaukee, USA, paid £250 each for a ringside seat and constant champagne; from north London came Mr and Mrs Daley, with their eight children; and from Scotland the gillie who taught Prince Charles to fish. Meanwhile behind the scenes were policemen, St John Ambulancemen, buskers and journalists. It was a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Weekend Weather ANNE purvis
Having been hailed as one of the great discoveries of her generation in 1981 at the age of 27, the soprano Isobel Buchanan faced a crucial year as she struggled to fulfil these early predictions.
With three major roles-The Countess in The Marriage of Figaro at Glyndebourne, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni at Aix-en-Provence and Adina in L'elisir d'amore in Chicago, she was bidding for a place in the prestigious and lucrative circus of international stars whose names draw the fans to the world's opera houses.
