A series of feature films starring Bob Hope
with Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour
and Charles Coburn
This is the first of the famous 'Road' pictures, in which Paramount teamed, for the first time, Bing Crosby and Bob Hope.
Hollywood folk-lore has it that the 'Road' films started on a golf course. Bing and Bob had already become golfing companions, and one day they made up a foursome with Victor Schertzinger, famous Hollywood director and composer, and Paramount producer Harlan Thompson. It didn't take long for the actors to excite Scherzinger and Thompson with their humour. A series of impromptu gags by Bing and Bob, which brought plenty of laughter, led Schertzinger to exclaim... 'What a team they'd make in pictures' The rest is history.

In just four months, the world's first jumbo jet goes into regular service over the Atlantic. Already 200 have been ordered by the world's airlines. Each is designed to carry nearly 500 passengers.
The jumbo has been called a 'pilot's dream.' Will it also be an airport's nightmare?
By next year, half a dozen of the giants may be queuing at peak hours to disgorge their passengers at London Airport. Round the world, airports face their biggest jam in history.
Jumbo jets will revolutionise airport design. But they may also speed up other travel developments, with far-reaching effects on the design-and peace-of our cities.
Bigger planes still are on the way. How many is too many in an aeroplane?

What matters in the news and out of it
I'm a musician; that's enough human dynamo, passionate Hungarian... is all nonsense; no I am eating and sleeping music, I'm a musician...
Earlier this year Georg Solti announced that in 1971 he would give up his post as Musical Director of Covent Garden in order to spend more time in the concert hall. He already enjoys a worldwide reputation as conductor of opera and symphony orchestras and as a top recording conductor with six Grands Prix du Disque to his credit.
In the second of two biographical programmes Georg Solti talks about his career from 1939 to the present day. He recalls the war years, teaching and playing the piano in Switzerland, and the difficulties he faced as a Hungarian Jew in Munich immediately after the war, where as Musical Director of the Bavarian Opera, he made his come-back as a conductor.
