Feature films with suspense, danger, excitement

Tonight: "Cry of the City"
starring Victor Mature, Richard Conte
with Fred Clark, Shelley Winter

An escaped gangster in New York makes a last attempt to beat the law in a relentless game of cat-and-mouse with one particularly tenacious detective.
Director Robert Siodmak brings a laconic sense of humour to this exciting on-the-spot drama of police action in New York, and ably exploits Victor Mature's capacity for self-parody in his performance as a first-generation Italian immigrant cop. Mature is best known for his beefy roles in such films as Samson and Delilah and The Robe; he has, however, played detective roles in several other films, notably "Hot Spot" seen earlier in The Saturday Thriller series. Richard Conte, who plays the tough young murderer Martin Rome, is himself of Italian extraction and brings great conviction to the role, again revealing himself as one of the screen's most sensitive actors. Viewers may remember him in "Thieves' Highway," recently screened by BBC-tv.
