A special Saturday Show featuring some of the funniest moments from their BBC-tv series
Starring Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise.

Tonight's show is going to be a collection of those items that Eric and Ernie like best and have enjoyed most during their last series. At the time of going to press, the lads are still arguing about what to put in and what they must leave out. But one thing is sure: among the sketches that you certainly will see is the one where everybody - including guest star Georgia Brown - finishes by wearing lampshades on their heads and cricket pads firmly strapped to their legs.

Feature films with suspense, danger, excitement.
Screenplay by Jules Furthman from a novel by William Lindsay Gresham.

Starring Tyrone Power, Joan Blondell, Coleen Gray

Stan, a small-time but ambitious barker for a fair, tricks his way into becoming a successful mind-reader by ruthlessly exploiting his friends - until his ambition overreaches itself.
This is one of Tyrone Power's most distinguished films. He is cast against type as a hard-headed fairground hustler - a very different role from the one he was seen in when "The Razor's Edge" was recently screened in The Great Stars series. Nightmare Alley is an exceptionally offbeat film for the period it was made in, and was not a great box-office success at the time of its initial release. This was probably because of Power's unsympathetic role, though his performance can now be seen as one of his best.
Joan Blondell, usually cast in comedy roles, here gives a mature character performance as Zeena, a 'mind-reader' reduced to fairground work on account of her drunken husband. She finds herself tricked by Stan into revealing the techniques of her act which he later exploits to his own ends.
The film is directed by Edmund Goulding, a British stage actor who went to Hollywood as a writer and later turned to directing. Among his screen credits are "Grand Hotel", "The Great Lie", "May-time", and "The Razor's Edge".

Each week 25,000 tons of newsprint, 50 hours of news bulletins
One man, Bernard Braden
and his team, John Pitman, Esther Rantzen
take a look at some of the things that happened - and some of the things that didn't.
Song of the week: Jake Thackray
Children of the week: Harold Williamson

If Noel Coward had been born in Leeds it would not have been necessary to invent Jake Thackray. As it is, there are differences. In the world of Noel Coward, men enter through french windows saying "Anyone for tennis?" In Jake's world they come through pub doors saying "Where's the draught beer?"
So far, in the songs he writes each week, Jake has fallen in love with our Sally-Ann girl, dreamed of kissing a vicar's missus, lusted after a newspaper pin-up called Fifi Golightly, and knocked ash from his pipe all over his landlord's suede shoes. This week... only Jake knows.
