Earlier this year Georg Solti announced that in 1971 he would give up his post as Musical Director of Covent Garden in order to spend more time in the concert hall. He already enjoys a worldwide reputation as conductor of opera and symphony orchestras and as a top recording conductor with six Grands Prix du Disque to his credit.
In the second of two biographical programmes Georg Solti talks about his career from 1939 to the present day. He recalls the war years, teaching and playing the piano in Switzerland, and the difficulties he faced as a Hungarian Jew in Munich immediately after the war, where as Musical Director of the Bavarian Opera, he made his come-back as a conductor.
