Puccini's well loved opera made an eagerly awaited return to London's Covent Garden recently in a new production conducted by Antonio Pappano , who particularly wanted to include it in his opening season as music director. He worked with the French production team of Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiserand an exciting international cast, plus the orchestra and chorus of the Royal Opera House.
The story concerns BF Pinkerton, an American naval officer stationed in Nagasaki in 1900, who has arranged a marriage to Japanese geisha girl Cio-Cio-San, known as Butterfly. He undertakes a wedding with her, despite warnings by US consul Sharpless. Pinkerton returns to America, but the faithful Butterfly waits, refusing to believe he has abandoned her. She dreams of the day when he will return but, when it comes, it is not at all how she imagined. Presented by Stephanie Hughes.

Live coverage of the third round of the Masters. Augusta provides the beautiful setting for the first major of the year, as the world's finest golfers compete to win the coveted Green Jacket. It was at this stage last year that TigerWoods really came into his own. Despite rain interrupting play for two days in succession, the and 2001 champion was a model of composure as he hit seven birdies to post a round of 66. That effort moved him to 11 under par and saw him share the lead with South Africa's Retief Goosen as they headed into the final round. But Woods prevailed to win his third Masters title.
Presented by Steve Rider. Commentary by Peter Alliss ,
Ken Brown and Alex Hay , plus reports from Julian Tutt.
Live coverage of the final day is tomorrow at 7.30pm.
