The third in an eight-part natural history of North America.

For the Spanish who came to Central America in the wake of Christopher Columbus, the vast wealth of their new empire was not enough. They wanted more and sailed north, chasing rumours of gold, slaves, and the Fountain of Youth. But they were in for a disappointment in the land they dubbed "Florida" - much of it was a vast swampland with no trace of treasures. It was the Americans, four centuries later, who turned this wild backwater into dollars. Alligator leather, bird plumes and the land itself, drained of water, finally became the El Dorado first dreamed of by the Spanish. Narrated by Alan Ereira. Away from the politicians and the spin doctors, what is really at stake during the general election? This second of three films examines European issues, with GregWood reporting on attempts to create a common crimefighting policy. The programme asks whether a European army, police force and tax system are realistic possibilities, and if this could be the last election in which Britain is independent and self-governing.
