In 1947, arthritis was destroying the lives of thousands of affected children. Then Dr Barbara Ansell came to the rescue. The tough yet caring approach to paediatric medicine pioneered by Dr Ansell and her team at Taplow Hospital in Berkshire helped mobilise children crippled by the disease, using techniques including physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and surgery.
