The Channel tunnel has been plagued by problems. Now, as the battle hots up between Eurotunnel and P and O Ferries for cross-Channel business, Modern
Times takes a look behind the scenes.
See today's choices.

Modern Times 9.00pm BBC2
The cola war is nothing compared to the Channel Wars examined in tonight's Modern Times. The cameras traced the intense rivalry between Eurotunnel and the ferry companies in the run-up to Eurotunnel's application for its car passenger licence last autumn. There's no love lost between the bosses - one P and O executive dismissed Eurotunnel's unpleasant "lightbulb and loo" decor, while Eurotunnel maintains that passengers want speed rather than : luxurious surroundings.
It's not just the executives who have their say: opinion is also canvassed from tunnel staff and passengers, including disgruntled lorry drivers complaining about the rubbery omelettes and rock-hard croissants. But the cameras leave Eurotunnel at a crucial point: with interest on its debt at £2 million each day, it faces a summer battle for the continental holiday traffic which it cannot afford to lose.
