A new generation of advertising is hitting cinema screens, poster boards and television. It is cynical and nihilistic, and directed at "generation X", the key 18-to-29-year-old consumers who currently spend nearly £2 billion a year. Advertisers believe this group's attitudes to advertising and branding are sophisticated and sceptical, making it hard to pitch their ads successfully. Jane Robins looks at how different companies are approaching this market and asks whether it is necessary for advertisers to use images of death and violence.

Two French officers are shot down over Germany and taken prisoner-of-war. The aristocratic Boeidieu appears to have more in common with the Prussian commandant, Von Rauffenstein, than with his down-to-earth companions, but his determination to help their escape plans is never in doubt.
