Nowhere to Run
"I left that night because it was my only chance. I probably would never get the chance to come downstairs again to phone," recalls an Asian teenager from Bradford, who had planned to run away from home for nearly a year.
She is one of an increasing number of 16-to 18-year-old Asian girls in Britain who are fleeingfrom parental restrictions. Some are escaping from arranged marriages, some are wantingto further their education. But there can be a high price to pay for their independence.
This first in a new series of Asian current-affairs programmes interviews some of the girls and the Bradford police, whose policy of aiding the runaways has been criticised by a variety of Asian community leaders. Executive producer Tony Moss Editor VyvSimson
