Leonard Bernstein 's musical opened on Broadway in 1944 and ran for 463 performances, was universally acclaimed and introduced the great urban paean New York, New York.
Gene Kelly starred in the film version. But for some reason, the musical has never been staged since, until a concert performance in 1992 at the Barbican Centre.
This film records that performance, enhanced with elaborate post-production techniques to evoke wartime
New York. With Cleo Laine , Tyne Daly , Marie McLoughlin ,
Frederica von Stade ,
Thomas Hampson , Samuel Ramey , Kurt Ollmann , David Garrison , Evelyn Lear and the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. Narration is by the show's writers
