Britain has a budget deficit of £50 billion, a problem to be addressed by the Chancellor on Budget Day next Tuesday. But what does this almost unimaginable figure actually represent, and what could be done to reduce it?
In a series of five programmes being shown each evening between now and Budget Day, a group of six volunteers from Bristol will attempt to find out what the Chancellor could do. Says producer Renee Knight : "Their job is to try and demystify the budget deficit and explain the reasons for It, in language that we can all understand."
Under the guidance of presenter Nisha Pillai , they will also have a specific problem to solve in the course of their investigations: they must recommend a way to knock £5 billion off the deficit.

Nowhere is nationalism a more sensitive issue than in Germany. "After the Second World War, everybody thought that Hitler had for ever disgraced the notion of German nationalism," says
Michael Ignatleff , writer and presenter of this series. But in his third report - from united Germany - he finds that nationalism is returning under many different guises.
Leo is a Leipzig skinhead, a neo-Nazi who thinks democracy is “unnatural” for Germans and believes that Auschwitz is a historical fabrication. Rosa Wolf is a Frankfurt liberal, who believes Germany should turn its back on the past and look to a future of "world citizenship". But what of those denied belonging, the Turks and other immigrants who have most to lose from the rebirth of nationalism?
