New Deal, New York
Continuing the series in which newsreel, music and eye-witness accounts recall the decade that brought America to the brink of economic catastrophe. In 1933 not everyone in New York was dancing to the New Deal rhythm: the black poor lived in slum ghettos. But when
Congressman La Guardia crossed Roosevelt, the President cut federal funds.
Director/Producer Dante J James

Les Dawson donned a stringy wig and voluminous black dress to play the title role in Roberto Cossa's grim satire of post-Falklands Argentina. First shown in 1991, it is repeated here as a tribute to the comedian, who died earlier this year.

Nona, "the old one", is the 100-year-old matriarch of a city family, whose gluttony reduces her kinfolk to beggary, prostitution and death. The role is traditionally played by a leading male comic.

Dawson chomped his way to an 181b weight-gain during the filming, but was glad of the opportunity to extend himself theatrically. "It's good that people can see me doing something other than a game show. There comes a point when you're not stretching yourself any more - hence my little excursion into the heavier theatre."

More Sex Please We 're British
"Everythingyou think you know about pornography is wrong, says Isabel Koprowski. "A tidal wave of misinformation on the subject has swamped us."
Koprowski, who has been managing editor of Forum and Penthouse, and who launched Women Only, a sex magazine catering forwomen, is a member of Feminists against
Censorship. In her film for Open Space she argues that there is a demand for pornography from women as well as men, that
Britain's obscenity laws are both unhealthy and sexist, and that legal reform would ease oppression and bring social benefits. Producer Mike MacCormack Series producer Giles Oakley
