Recalling America in the 1930s. The Road to Rock Bottom As the full force of the Depression struck, the crime rate rose and Americans began to lose faith in the ability of their government to maintain law and order. Hungry farmers marched into small towns demanding food and veterans marched on Washington. ProducerTerry Kay Rockefeller
(The season of films about the Depression continues at 11.40pm with If Had a Million)

In keeping with its reputation as a showcase for "lost masterpieces" (the last two seasons have revived Rodney Ackland's Absolute Hell and Terence Rattigan 's After the Dance) as well as established classics, Performance presents the first production for 60 years of the witty and tragic family drama by Ronald Mackenzie.
Mackenzie, who wrote only three plays before his death in a car accident at the age of 29, was hailed as the most exciting young playwright of his generation. But his work, which has a disturbing bleakness, later became unfashionable.
It is early summer in the secluded seaside village of Betworthy. But there is a strained atmosphere in the once-prosperous Maitland household, because the family has fallen on hard times.
