Britain has a budget deficit of £50 billion, a problem to be addressed by the Chancellor on Budget Day next Tuesday. But what does this almost unimaginable figure actually represent, and what could be done to reduce it?
In a series of five programmes being shown each evening between now and Budget Day, a group of six volunteers from Bristol will attempt to find out what the Chancellor could do. Says producer Renee Knight : "Their job is to try and demystify the budget deficit and explain the reasons for It, in language that we can all understand."
Under the guidance of presenter Nisha Pillai , they will also have a specific problem to solve in the course of their investigations: they must recommend a way to knock £5 billion off the deficit.
