Its brief is wide, ranging from health and environment themes to media, arts and sport; from matters of life and death to less frenetic areas of leisure and culture. Drawing on the expertise of the reporters and correspondents in the BBC's Social Affairs
Unit, each edition analyses the facts and questions the opinions at the core of the individual issue to provide a comprehensive analysis.

In the last programme in the series, it's the turn of the dry, sunny, south-facing border, where you can really go to town and create a riot of colour. It's also time to think of winter and spring colour, using bulbs. If you plant these correctly, you can be assured of many years of colourful blooms. By mid-summer, the south-facing borders of Beth Chatto and Rosemary Verey are at their best.

Roberto Rossellini
The great Italian film director, who died in 1977, was the founder of 'neo-realism'.
Following the international success of his films dealing with the Second World War -
Rome, Open City and Paisa - he turned in the 50s to psychological drama. His affair and subsequent marriage to Ingrid Bergman created a major scandal.
Eventually he abandoned the cinema for a series of documentaries on historical figures as part of a great mission to educate the world.
Bearing witness to his genius will be his daughter Isabella, son Gil, directors the Taviani brothers, Carlo Lizzani and Lindsay Anderson. There is also rare footage of Rossellini. Director DAVID THOMPSON
