In the first of two award-winning anthropological films about the Koyukon people - the most northerly of all American Indians - their way of life is seen to be in harmony with the harsh but beautiful environment of the Alaskan winter.
Temperatures along the Yukon can drop to -60'C. This is a time of hunting for moose and for fur-bearing beaver. The former is their beef, the latter their cash. But a hunter must be careful to take only what he needs, and also to make his peace with the most powerful creature in his beliefs: the raven. Without its blessing little will go right...
Tom is one of the many children whose lives are remembered at the Alder Centre. His parents had no idea where to run following the loss of their 7-month-old baby. This new centre in Liverpool, attached to the largest children's hospital in the country, became their sanctuary. Family and friends turn their backs, afraid of such intense grief, say many bereaved parents. 'It's vital to meet others who really understand you.'
The Alder Centre's approach is controversial - and inspiring. At last there is somewhere in Britain where children's lost lives can be mourned - and celebrated.
