Tom is one of the many children whose lives are remembered at the Alder Centre. His parents had no idea where to run following the loss of their 7-month-old baby. This new centre in Liverpool, attached to the largest children's hospital in the country, became their sanctuary. Family and friends turn their backs, afraid of such intense grief, say many bereaved parents. 'It's vital to meet others who really understand you.'
The Alder Centre's approach is controversial - and inspiring. At last there is somewhere in Britain where children's lost lives can be mourned - and celebrated.
