Spirits of Defiance
The Mangbetu people live at the edge of the Zaire rainforest, in the very centre of Africa. Once feared by explorers as cannibals, the Mangbetu today reveal their most private beliefs and ceremonies.
Now, missionaries struggle to exorcise the 'devils' of Mangbetu life: their oracle, hidden in the forest; their hallucinogenic rituals and their faith in magic and sorcery.
The Mangbetu describe their attitudes to the outside forces that may change their lives and to the missionaries, whom they, in their turn, see as 'clandestine sorcerers who stopped us eating each other so that they might eat us - with their eyes if not with their teeth'.
