Killer missiles fly across the battlefield, seek their target, and then strike. Rolling rocket mines hunt down tanks all on their own. Fibre optic networks detect and report intruders. Such 'smart weapons' rely on new technologies that are revolutionising conventional warfare. Using computers, they can strike deep into enemy territory, and destroy targets that until now were only threatened by atomic weapons. So they could make tactical nuclear weapons obsolete - and signal the beginning of a new hi-tech arms race.
