5: Not Quite Paradise
For most young people, an Operation Raleigh expedition is a chance to live and work with remote communities all over the world. For a few it provides an opportunity to make a film. Tonight's film, the fifth in a series of six, is made by a team from the Royal College of Art. Thirty distinguished scientists and 150 Raleigh venturers are working in a remote and largely unexplored jungle island in eastern Indonesia. Three months' supplies have to be carried in by boat and on foot; there are no roads and helicopters cannot approach the island because of the dense cloud which covers it. For the Operation Raleigh staff it is a challenge to keep track of the different groups working - without radios - across 700-square miles of uncharted jungle. No matter how much preparation goes into an operation of this kind, it is in the nature of expeditions that the unexpected will happen ... Directed by SMON SHORE Edited by PAUL SHEPARD

A series featuring artists and writers who live and work in exile.
Raoul Ruiz
Chilean Film Director
In 1973 a military coup put an end to Salvador Allende 's
Marxist government in Chile. In the aftermath many film makers were arrested; the rest, including Raoul Ruiz , fled.
Ruiz rejects what he calls
'the whole mythology of exile - that for everything there is one place that is better than any other' and he enjoys the 'unstable' nature of the immigrant community where he has settled in Paris.
Ruiz says: 'it is a national sport in Chile to look for nonsense and paradox', and his strange and beautiful films reflect the fact that he is a joker of the most serious kind.
