Jessye Norman was last seen on BBCtv in February in a documentary biography and before that in a live performance from the Proms of Schoenberg's Gurrelieder. Kathleen Battle was the first American opera singer to receive the Laurence Olivier Award for her performances at Co vent Garden.

Max Ophiils 's glittering portrait of the notorious Lola Montes was savagely cut by nervous producers. The version to be shown tonight in its original wide-screen format is the longest still in existence.
